Gowalla offers a mix of a social app and a travel content guide, focused around local experiences.
It formerly was a a location-based mobile application, competing head-on with FourSquare, that allowed users to share their locations with their Facebook & Twitter friends. Per Gowalla, users "stamp their passport" with their mobile phone thereby earning rewards at the places that they visit. Gowalla was created by Alamofire which creates social games.
In December 2011, Gowalla was acquired by Facebook. Gowalla's valuation / acquisition price and other terms of the acquisition were not disclosed although rumors pegged the Gowalla acquisition price at $3 million. It was reported that Gowalla's acquisition by Facebook was primarily a talent acquisition.
